Frequently Asked Questions

What zones and cities do you cover?

GrowSmart covers Canada (all 10 provinces, zones 2a–8b), the US (all 50 states, zones 2a–12a), the UK & Ireland (zones 7a–10b), and Western Europe including France, Germany, Spain, Italy, Netherlands, Scandinavia and more. Real frost dates for your exact city. We include major metros, suburbs, rural areas, and small towns. If your specific city is not in our hand-curated catalog, our global lookup resolves it on demand.

Where does the frost date data come from?

Canadian frost dates come from Environment Canada 1991–2020 Climate Normals and NRCan Plant Hardiness Zone data (2024 update). US data is sourced from NOAA 1991–2020 Climate Normals and the USDA 2023 Hardiness Zone Map. UK and Ireland data is based on Met Office 1991–2020 Climate Normals. European data draws from national meteorological services including DWD (Germany), Météo-France, KNMI (Netherlands), AEMET (Spain) and others.

What's included in the free plan?

The free plan gives you spring planting schedules for up to 10 plants, basic companion planting info, and works on all devices — including offline. No account required. Pro unlocks unlimited plants, full three-season scheduling (spring, summer, and fall), succession planting, and care tracking.

Do I need to create an account?

No. You can start planning immediately — no sign-up, no email required. Your data saves locally on your device. You can also create a free account to save your garden across devices and unlock features like Sage AI.

Does GrowSmart work offline?

Yes. Install it to your home screen and your full schedule, plant data, and care log work without an internet connection — so you can check your planting dates right in the garden.

How is this different from other garden planning apps?

Most garden apps give you generic calendars or focus on aesthetics. GrowSmart calculates every planting date from your specific city's frost dates — and plans across three seasons, not just spring. It also includes succession planting automation and companion planting with actual reasons, not just checkmarks.

Built by a gardener, for gardeners

Amanda Holt, founder of GrowSmart

I'm Amanda. Full-time accountant, wife, biological and foster mom, and the person who built GrowSmart because I genuinely needed it.

My husband and I manage a full household with six kids and a serious garden. Vegetables, herbs, berries, an orchard, and flower gardens for the pollinators. We garden in Zone 5b Ontario. I knew what I wanted to grow — I just had no way to keep it organized on top of everything else.

So I built something that would do that for us.

We grow with intention. Most of what comes out of our garden gets preserved: jams, sauces, pickles, frozen harvests, with the goal of stocking our pantry for the full year. In a time when grocery bills keep climbing, growing and preserving your own food isn't just satisfying — it's one of the most practical things a family can do.

GrowSmart tells you exactly what to do and when, for every plant in your garden, all season long. Spring, summer, and fall. 195 crops. Works across Canada, the US, UK, and Ireland.

It's free to start and you don't need an account to try it. If you grow vegetables and you're tired of trying to hold it all in your head, this was built for you.
